Summary:
Tech Support scams happen when a scammer promises to provide someone with added security, support, or aid in correcting a problem related to their computer hardware, software, or other peripheral devices connected to their computer or in their home.

The scams are initiated through pop-ups, fake websites, embedded in search results, and via email. Most of the scammers pose as representatives or technicians from a technical support department for a known and trusted provider of software, hardware, or even as government agents.

Please note: If tech support scammers are in possession of your personal information, identity theft may occur. How do scams lead to identity theft?

Tech Support Scam methods

#1. They want you to call them

This tech support scam often uses a pop-up that comes on to your computer screen appearing to be a legitimate warning or alert from a trusted source like Microsoft or Apple, or from well-known antivirus companies like Norton, Avast or McAfee. It can also appear to be a warning from your operating system alerting you to a problem or imminent threat.

The alert usually lists a phone number to help you resolve a fraudulent problem or directs you to a scam website disguised and designed to look like one of the trusted sources. Here’s an example:

The phone number in the picture above is a SCAM. It DOES NOT belong to Microsoft.

The alert is a fabrication. The phone number connects you to the scammer. Like many scammers, they caution you not to shut down or restart your computer. That’s exactly what you should do. It’s possible that the scammer is uploading a virus to your computer or using malware to comb information from your hard drive while you are looking at this message.

In some instances, a pop-up fills your screen and you can’t get rid of it even by trying to close your browser. You have no alternative but to do a hard shutdown and restart by holding down the power button on your computer. Shutting down shuts them off and shuts them out.

Scammers may also direct you to call a toll free phone number immediately to demonstrate a problem with your device.

And often will try to sell you enhanced security in the form of a firewall or other Internet security software or support services.

#2. Inbound calls

Tech support scammers also contact people directly by phone. They usually pretend to be a computer technician from a trusted and well-known company and indicate that they have found a problem with your computer. When asked how they could be aware of the problem they will often point to the routine reports that many companies like Microsoft ask you to enable on your computer which sends a report to them anytime you have a problem. While Microsoft would never call you about any of these reports a scammer will pose as a Microsoft technician without hesitation.

#3. The “Click Here” Pop-Up Ruse

It’s not just about phone calls and a prominently displayed phone number. Many scammers will pop up an alert or warning and offer a button that you can conveniently hit to connect you to their service or a promise to quickly resolve your issue. Here again, the warning will appear to be from a credible and trusted source but all you’re seeing are graphic design shenanigans. The button will direct you to a bogus website where the scam will continue.

The phone number in the picture above is a SCAM. It DOES NOT belong to Microsoft.

While many scams are trying to collect money from you for bogus security or software resolutions, just as many are attempting to install malware on your computer. This can happen just by clicking on the button on the screen and often happens when you actually buy software or a solution from a scammer. The software you’ve uploaded rarely works, but the malware embedded in it sure does. It’s a double-dip for the scammers. They get your money and they have the opportunity to infect your computer with a virus or malware.

Our investigations into Common Scams of 2024

What is malware?

Malware is taken from the term “MALicious softWARE.” While some people assume it’s a virus it’s more than that. Malware is an umbrella name for any form of malicious code and can appear as a virus, Trojan Horse, worm, spyware, adware, botnets, and ransomware. All are designed to spread across a computer and/or network.

Malware is typically invisible and hard to detect. It resides deep in the operating system whether it be a computer, a network, a smartphone, or a tablet. In some instances, it simply acts maliciously wiping out data and compromising overall performance. In others, it captures personal and financial data and forwards it to the scammer for identity theft or financial fraud. Even removing the malware does not solve the problem and further remedies need to be pursued.

The Bad Path to Malware

If a scammer has installed software (malware) that you need to remove, Microsoft has advice on how to go about it. You should also scrub your hard drive with an anti-virus program after uninstalling any suspicious software. The Windows Security feature can help you identify the locations of any malware resident on your hard drive.

Tech Support Scams often lurk in the midst of internet search results

This may be the most insidious form of tech support scams. Simply searching for information about tech support or ways to correct a problem with a computer or electronic device can lead you to a malicious website. Simply hover over the link before clicking and verify that the domain name is spelled correctly. Scammers often use misspelled domains in order to trick the consumer into thinking that they have visited the official company website.

How to tell if a website is a scam site:

Poorly constructed website

The website consists of only one page. The navigation bar navigates to nowhere. This is another symptom of the “one-page” scam site.

There is no “About Us” page on the website. Almost all companies with a website write this page first and write it proudly. If you don’t see an “About” page the only thing the page is about is a scam. This is especially true if there is an “About” tab on a navigation bar and the “About” page is blank. Even if a company launched a venture without an “About Us” story written, they wouldn’t direct you to a blank page.

Check for a “Contact” page

They really don’t want you to contact them. They want to get your money or information with as little contact as possible beyond the scam.

Check again for correct spelling and grammar. Large trusted brands don’t make these simple mistakes.

Is the page poorly designed?

It’s very simple to bring some elements of good design to a webpage. Many everyday people use WordPress at their kitchen tables and do a fine job. Poor graphic design is not a sign of a legitimate and established brand or business. It’s another sign of scammer laziness.

Does the company have a social media presence?

A dedicated social media presence takes a lot of time and effort. If the company does not have a social media presence with a fair amount of followers, that’s a sign that it could be a scam.

Does the company clearly define returns or refund policy?

Does the company have a valid terms and conditions page or a privacy policy? This is another step that scammers often skip for obvious reasons.

Is the website ranked or reviewed in any way, shape or form?

This isn’t about just evaluating customer satisfaction scores, it’s a way to evaluate whether or not a venture or enterprise is genuinely in business and not a scam. If there is no rank or review for the website it’s probably a scam.

How old is the domain?

You can easily check to see the age of any domains using whois service. A vast majority of fraudulent websites are less than 1 year old.

Tech support scams via email

Email is another delivery vehicle for tech support scams. The messaging, threats and sense of urgency are similar to other communications. Once again, they pose as a support technician from a large and trusted company and urge you to act quickly to resolve a problem they have identified with hardware or software that you own.

The easiest way to know if an email is from a scammer is to look at the email address from the sender. If an email address uses a free email provider such as @gmail.com or @yahoo.com and invites you to call a phone number or click a button to reply. It’s a scam.

Other Signs of a Tech Support Scam Email:

  • Threatening language.
  • A sense of urgency and panic.
  • Use of overtly complex technical language that doesn’t make sense.
  • Awkward sentence construction and expressions.

Tech support scams are on the increase

According to SCAMGUARD™, tech support scams have become one of the most reported scams in the United States with a reported average loss of $300.

Tech support scammers leverage the fear they’ve created

It’s ironic but the threat that scammers claim to protect you against is exactly what they are trying to do to you with the scam. Some of the most common issues they promise to resolve are related to a compromised email or bank account, a virus on a computer, or to help with renewing a software license. They also may offer you ways to resolve issues with a printer, network, modem or other peripheral devices posing as technical support representatives for:

  • GPS companies offering you an update for your GPS app or informing you that your device or software has been corrupted.
  • Printer companies warning you of a virus or malware that infects printer buffers and the need to protect your operating system.
  • Cable companies informing you that your account has been hacked or promising an offer that’s too good to be true.
  • Smartphone service providers informing you that your phone has been hacked or that they have identified a threat to phones and/or tablets serviced by their company.
  • Virtual currency exchanges that engage in cryptocurrency transactions such as Bitcoin. Many people are unaware of cryptocurrencies, but scammers will often ask for payment in Bitcoin because it’s untraceable. Of course, they’ll be very happy to help you set up a Bitcoin account to make it easier for you. Don’t do that. Credible, legitimate hardware and software companies never ask for payment with Bitcoin or gift cards.

Don’t put yourself on the “Sucker’s List”

There really is a suckers list. Scammers exchange or sell it to each other. The list identifies people who have called a scammer’s number and the caller’s phone numbers are harvested through caller ID. Even if you don’t fall for the scam, just calling one of these numbers will land you on the suckers list and scammers will continue to threaten and pester you by phone.

If for any reason you feel the need to call a suspicious number, take the time to mark your phone as an unknown caller. To do this, hit *67 before you dial. You will appear as “No Caller ID” on their caller ID so they can’t harvest your phone number.

Common signs of a Tech Support Scam

  • The representative is asking to remotely access your computer.
  • The message or communication is rude or threatening.
  • Tech support scammers commonly use scare tactics. For example: “You have been hacked.” or “Criminal activities being conducted from your IP address”
  • If the website URL or email address has curious or inconsistent annotation or spelling. It’s a scam.
  • The domain name is less than 1 year old.

What companies like Microsoft never do

Microsoft behaves like any trusted, national brand. They have strict guidelines and policies governing communication and behaviors and abide by them. According to Microsoft:

  • Microsoft does not send unsolicited email messages or make unsolicited phone calls to request personal or financial information, or to provide technical support to fix your computer.
  • Any communication with Microsoft has to be initiated by you.
  • If a notification appears with a phone number, don’t call the number. Error and warning messages from Microsoft never include a phone number.
  • Download software only from official Microsoft partner websites or the Microsoft Store. Be wary of downloading software from third-party sites, as some of them might have been modified without the author’s knowledge to bundle support scam malware and other threats.
  • Microsoft technical support will never ask that you pay for support in the form of Bitcoin or gift cards.

What to do when a Tech Support Scammer strikes

  • If they call and you suspect they’re a scammer, don’t answer it.
  • If they call and you answer and suspect they’re a scammer, hang up.
  • If they pop-up on your computer screen and fill the screen so you can’t navigate, simply close your browser window by pressing Alt+F4 or Command+Q if you are using an Apple computer.
  • If they contact you via email and you suspect they’re a scammer, don’t open it.
  • If you open an email and suspect it’s from a scammer, send it to your SPAM folder and then delete it. Don’t reply to it and do not click on any embedded links, tabs, buttons or “Click Here” statements.
  • Never download an attachment or program if you have any suspicion it’s from a scammer.
  • Examine any and all links even if you feel you are not in the midst of a scam. Scammers have become experts at hiding in plain sight. Hover over any links before clicking on them and make sure the domain name is spelled correctly. Example: microsoft.com and not micrasoft.com or mlcrosoft.com
  • Experian is a credit reporting service that offers a ⦁ free dark web scan that determines if your Social Security number, phone number or email appear on the dark web where scammers lurk.
  • If you feel that your identity could have been breached, consider getting an identity theft protection. Here is a link to LifeLock with a discount.
  • If you don’t have antivirus software, get it. A google search can lead you to some of the more well-known companies. You can get Norton Security 360 here.
  • DO NOT provide remote access to your computer to anyone.
  • If you’ve already provided remove access to your computer to a scammer, shut your computer down and take it to a local computer repair shop.

Let common sense be your guide

If you spend enough time on the Internet, it’s inevitable that you’ll encounter a tech support scam. Taking a deep breath and allowing common sense to prevail will help you see through the scam. The simple fact is that legitimate companies and brands don’t behave that way. Their communication with their customers and clients is always polite, professional and disciplined by well-established brand and business principles.

Ultimately, the best thing to do if you are concerned about a personal technology problem is to take the time to find the official contact information for a company or service and ask them directly if you have a potential issue with your technology. There are real tech support people out there who can genuinely help you, and most importantly, not hurt you.

Attention: Consumers who have been contacted by tech support scammers could have had their personal information breached. TotalScam!™ highly recommends that consumers whose information has been breached obtain identity theft protection service immediately.
