What is a pet scam?

Online pet scams involve deceptive practices where scammers trick people by showcasing attractive pet images and claiming that the pets are available for sale or adoption. They may even offer the pets for free, with only shipping fees required. To appear legitimate, these fraudsters create fake logistics websites that pretend to be reputable shipping companies. Communication with victims usually occurs through messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook.

Scammers rarely engage in voice calls and almost never agree to video conferences, making it impossible for victims to see the pet in real-time. Once the victim pays the shipping fee, the scammers may invent stories about customs delays and demand additional clearance fees. This cycle of deception continues until the victim realizes that the pet does not exist, leaving them emotionally and financially devastated.
