What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters exploit the affection potential pet owners have for animals. These scammers create enticing ads or sophisticated websites offering popular or exotic pets at prices that seem too good to be true. They captivate buyers with heartwarming photos, which are typically copied from genuine sources, and weave compelling narratives to gain trust. When an interested buyer reaches out, the scammer promptly requests payment upfront, often through methods that are difficult to trace or recover, such as wire transfers.
As the transaction progresses, the scammer may pile on additional fees for vaccinations, shipping, or customs clearance, pressuring the buyer to pay quickly to avoid supposed delays in receiving their new pet. Unfortunately, after the buyer sends the money, communication ceases, the scammer vanishes, and the promised pet never arrives. The scam is designed to milk as much money as possible from victims before they catch on to the deceit. It’s a heartless con that leaves people both financially and emotionally distressed.
