What is a pet scam?

Online pet scams are deceptive schemes where fraudsters use captivating images of pets, often advertised at a huge discount or up for free adoption, to ensnare potential victims. They craft an illusion of credibility by employing fake logistics websites, impersonating legitimate shipping firms. After the shipping fee is paid by the victim, they may spin tales about customs delays, demanding additional clearance charges.

These scammers typically interact via messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook, rarely via voice calls, and almost never through video calls, thereby dismissing any requests to view the pet on a live video. This fraudulent cycle continues until the victim recognizes the non-existence of the pet, often leaving them emotionally and financially ruined.
