What is a pet scam?

A scammer’s main goal in an online pet scam is to extract as much money as possible from unsuspecting buyers. They achieve this by posting ads or creating websites that advertise pets for sale, such as puppies or exotic breeds, at unusually low prices. To entice potential buyers, the scammer will use adorable photos, often stolen from legitimate sites, and create convincing stories. Once a buyer expresses interest, the scammer will request upfront payment for the pet, typically through non-traceable methods like wire transfer.

To further exploit the buyer, the scammer may add unexpected costs for vaccines, shipping, or customs fees, always demanding immediate payment to avoid any delays. However, after the payment is made, the scammer will vanish, leaving the buyer without the promised pet.
