What is a pet scam?

The scammer promises to deliver the pet, often claiming it’s up for adoption and is free, but requires a fee for shipping. They may use third-party co-conspirators to create fake logistics websites, posing as shipping companies, to provide a false sense of security. The scam continues until the victim realizes the pet doesn’t exist, often leaving them financially and emotionally distressed.

The scammer will avoid showing the pet on a video call, insisting on the urgency of the shipping fee payment. Once the fee is paid, the scammer might claim a delay due to customs, demanding an additional fee for clearance. Online pet scams are fraudulent schemes where scammers use appealing pictures of pets to lure potential victims.
