What is a pet scam?

Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters create enticing ads or websites offering pets, often puppies or sought-after breeds, at prices that seem too good to be true. These scammers use heartwarming photos, which are typically stolen from real websites, and craft compelling narratives to attract unsuspecting animal lovers. When an interested buyer reaches out, the scammer insists on receiving payment upfront, preferring methods that are difficult to trace or reverse, such as wire transfers. As the transaction progresses, the scammer may pile on additional fees for vaccinations, shipping, or customs clearance, pressuring the buyer to pay quickly to avoid supposed delays in the pet’s delivery.

Unfortunately, after the payment is made, the scammer vanishes, and the promised pet never arrives. The aim of these scammers is to siphon off as much money as they can before the victim catches on to the deceit. It’s a heartless scam that preys on the emotions of pet lovers, leaving them both financially and emotionally distressed.
