What is a pet scam?
Pet scammers prey on the emotions of animal lovers by advertising adorable pets with heartwarming backstories. These deceitful sellers present themselves as reputable breeders, yet they consistently find reasons to avoid showing the animal live on a video call, citing a variety of excuses. The truth is, these scammers don’t actually possess any animals to sell. To enhance the illusion of authenticity, they often enlist the help of accomplices who set up sham logistics websites. These sites masquerade as legitimate pet shipping services, offering to handle the delivery of the nonexistent pet, thereby providing an additional layer of false assurance to the unsuspecting buyer.
When the time comes for payment, the victim is instructed to cover the costs for the pet’s transportation and care. However, once the payment is transferred, the scammer vanishes without a trace, and the anticipated pet never materializes, leaving the victim defrauded and without a new companion.
