What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters exploit the affection of animal lovers with deceptive offers. These scammers post enticing photos of pets, often purporting that the animals are available for adoption at no cost, save for a supposed shipping fee. To make their ruse more convincing, they may collaborate with accomplices to set up sham logistics websites that mimic legitimate shipping companies, thus providing an illusion of credibility. When potential buyers request a live video to see the pet, scammers dodge the request, citing various excuses and pressing for the immediate payment of the shipping fee.
After the initial payment, the scammer might concoct additional obstacles, such as unexpected customs delays, to extract more money for supposed clearance fees. This cycle of deceit and manipulation can continue until the victim comes to the painful realization that there is no pet, leaving them not only with a financial loss but also with emotional turmoil from the betrayal of their trust.
