What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters exploit the affection of animal lovers with deceptive offers. These scammers post enticing photos of pets, often purporting that the animals are available for adoption at no cost, to attract unsuspecting victims. The catch comes with the supposed need for a shipping fee to transport the pet to its new home. To make the scam appear legitimate, they may even set up fake websites for non-existent logistics companies, complete with customer service representatives.
These scammers are careful to avoid any requests for a live video interaction with the pet, instead pressing for a quick payment of the shipping fee, citing urgency. After the initial payment, the scam can escalate, with the fraudster concocting stories about customs delays and demanding more money for various clearance fees. Victims are strung along with false promises until they realize the harsh truth: there is no pet, and they have been swindled, leaving them both financially poorer and emotionally wounded.
