What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters exploit the affection of animal lovers with deceptive offers. These scammers post enticing photos of pets, often purporting that the animals are available for adoption at no cost, save for a supposed shipping fee. To make their ruse more convincing, they may collaborate with accomplices to set up sham logistics websites that mimic legitimate shipping companies, thus providing an illusion of authenticity. When potential buyers show interest, the scammer typically refuses to engage in a video call to show the pet live, citing various excuses and pressing for the immediate payment of the shipping fee.
After the initial payment is made, the scammer might concoct additional hurdles, such as unexpected customs delays, which supposedly require further payments for clearance. This cycle of deceit and extortion can continue until the victim is faced with the harsh reality that there is no pet, leaving them not only financially scammed but also emotionally devastated by the betrayal of their trust.
