What is a pet scam?

Pet scammers prey on the emotions of animal lovers by advertising adorable pets with heartwarming backstories. These deceitful sellers present themselves as reputable breeders, yet they consistently find reasons to avoid showing the animal live on a video call, citing a variety of excuses. In truth, these scammers do not possess any animals to sell. To enhance the illusion of authenticity, they often recruit accomplices who set up fraudulent logistics websites. These sites masquerade as legitimate pet shipping companies, tasked with the safe delivery of the nonexistent pet, thereby providing an additional layer of false assurance to the unsuspecting buyer.

The scam reaches its climax when the victim is instructed to pay for the pet’s transportation and other related fees. Once the payment is transferred, the scammer vanishes without a trace, and the eagerly anticipated pet never materializes, leaving the victim both heartbroken and financially depleted.
