What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern, where fraudsters exploit the affection of animal lovers with deceptive offers. These scammers post alluring photos of pets, often purporting that the animals are available for adoption at no cost, only to claim that there are necessary fees for transportation. To make their ruse more convincing, they might employ accomplices to set up sham logistics websites that mimic legitimate shipping companies, thus providing an illusion of credibility.
These scammers typically refuse to provide live video proof of the pet, citing various excuses, and press for immediate payment of the shipping fee. After the initial payment, they may concoct additional obstacles, such as customs delays, to extract more money for supposed clearance charges. The scam persists, draining the victim’s finances, until the heartbreaking realization that the beloved pet never existed, leaving a trail of financial loss and emotional turmoil.
