What is a pet scam?

Pet scammers prey on the emotions of animal lovers by advertising adorable pets with heartwarming backstories. These deceitful sellers present themselves as reputable breeders, yet they consistently find reasons to avoid showing the animal live on a video call, citing a variety of excuses. The reality is that these scammers do not possess any animals to sell. To enhance the illusion of authenticity, they often enlist the help of accomplices who set up sham logistics websites. These sites masquerade as pet shipping services, supposedly in charge of delivering the nonexistent pet to its new home.

This elaborate ruse gives the buyer a false sense of security and legitimacy to the transaction. When the time comes for payment, the victim is instructed to cover the costs for the pet’s transportation and other fees. However, once the payment is transferred, the scammer vanishes without a trace, and the eagerly anticipated pet never materializes, leaving the victim both heartbroken and financially cheated.
