What is a pet scam?
Online pet scams are a growing concern for animal lovers looking to welcome a new furry friend into their homes. Scammers exploit the emotional appeal of cute animals by setting up fraudulent ads or websites offering popular or exotic pets at prices that seem too good to be true. They entice unsuspecting buyers with heartwarming photos, which are typically stolen from genuine sources, and craft elaborate narratives to gain trust. When an interested buyer reaches out, the scammer promptly requests payment upfront, often through untraceable methods like wire transfers.
As the transaction progresses, the scammer may pile on additional fees for vaccinations, shipping, or customs, pressuring the buyer to pay quickly to avoid supposed delays. Tragically, after the buyer sends the money, the scammer vanishes, and the promised pet never arrives. These scammers are adept at manipulating emotions to maximize their ill-gotten gains before the victim catches on to the deceit.
