What is a pet scam?

Online pet scams are a growing concern in the digital age, where fraudsters prey on the emotions of animal lovers. These scammers use appealing images of pets, claiming they are available for sale or adoption at little to no cost, with the exception of shipping fees. To appear credible, they often set up fake websites that mimic legitimate pet shipping companies. Communication is typically limited to text-based platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Facebook Messenger, as the scammers avoid voice or video interactions that could expose their deceit.

Once the initial shipping fee is paid, the scammer may invent various hurdles, such as customs issues, to extract more money for supposed clearance fees. This cycle of deception can persist, draining the victim’s finances and leaving them heartbroken when they finally realize that the beloved pet they thought they were getting does not exist.
